Description
This 1986 U.S. Stamp Block of 4 commemorates the achievements of 5 early Arctic Explorers. These brave explorers faced death and peril during numerous expeditions to map and collect data from the unexplored north.
Explorer Elisha Kent Kane found passage into the Arctic unknown during the 1850’s. Adolphus Greely used this passageway for several deep Arctic expeditions during the 1880’s, including one which reached the, then, furthest northern point. These early achievements led to Robert Peary and Matthew Henson‘s many expeditions during the late 1800’s and finally reaching the North Pole in the early 1900’s. During this time period, Canadian Explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson completed exploration of the Arctic Sea.
