Over 2,000 years ago, a common series of paths and roads began to emerge between China and Europe. Today, this vast network spans thousands of miles and includes both land and sea routes. This vital network of routes is depicted beautifully upon the 2017 Kyrgyzstan Great Silk Road Souvenir Sheet. The Great Silk Road was indeed used my merchants of highly sought after Chinese Silk. But it has been, and is currently, used by merchants of all sorts as well as political and religious missionaries. So important to culture and trade, the stretch of the Great Silk Road that passes through Kyrgyzstan was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
